First Holy Communion

The sacrament of First Holy Communion (ordinarily called Eucharist) is considered a most important occasion in a person’s Catholic life. It means that in receiving the body and blood of Jesus Christ, the person shares in the adult table and joins in a new and deeper relationship with the other members of the faith community.

Most ordinarily, Communion is received for the first time when the recipient is 7 or 8 years old which is considered the age of reason in the Catholic Church. A different age can be chosen if parents, teachers, or the adult recipient discerns that s/he understands the meaning of this sacrament.

Preparation for the reception of this sacrament is the responsibility of the parents or guardian.  If the person receiving the sacrament is old enough, s/he may decide on an appropriate preparation program.  If the person receiving his/her first communion would like some help, we have resources in our grade school and among the parish staff to give direction during this period.

Because preparation for the reception of first communion is a good time to introduce the sacrament of reconciliation, it would be good to contact the pastor or a priest of your choice in order to schedule a time for the reception of this sacrament.

The sacrament of First Communion can be received during any regularly scheduled Mass that is convenient for both the family and the parish.

For those who would like to join in with other young people who are preparing for first communion, there is a class preparation each year handled by one of the grade school teachers at our parish grade school.  We also partner with St. Clement and Bellarmine Chapel (Xavier University Campus) for sacrament preparation if their schedule suits you better.

For information on the Bellarmine Chapel program, contact Jane Myers at myersj6@xavier.edu or 745-3317.

For more information on the St. Clement program, contact Larry Ungerer lungerer@stclementcincinnati.org or visit stclementcincinnati.org  The St. Clement religious ed program is for children 3 years of age to 6th grade.
